LOOKING FORWARD TO WWDC AND THE NEW & SHINY

Unfortunately I will be working when WWDC does the event. I’ll have to watch it later. I hear there going to be updates to Voice Control. VC is great but still needs work. It struggles with homonyms I want to and it gives me two. Then in the correct word command it doesn’t list the correct version of the word I want. So I have to type instead of saying the number to choose.

JOYS OF TUTORIALS

Learning FastAPI and Flask and MongoDB. Loads of tutorials available on YouTube and on the Mongo University space. Also following a course on Udemy which has been really good. The trouble is when you get to a point and something is supposed to work and it doesn’t. Often the problem is a spelling mistake or a syntax error you have not spotted. So easy to make little mistakes which mess it all up.

DUE VERSUS REMINDERS

I used Reminders the Apple app for a while and it is pretty capable. Worked better as far as synchronisation goes than Sorted. Now I have go back to using Due because it has the feature of nagging me every 5 minutes until the task is done. Does a proper alert too. Works on my Apple Watch - So I have no excuse for not getting the job completed.

MONGO DB AND FASTAPI

Really getting into it and tomorrow I want to add Flask to the mix see if I can use the data being stored in the Mongo database on a dynamic web page. Who knew databases and Python would be so much fun. I wasn’t at all keen on Pything when I first looked at it, but soon got to love it more than Javascript.

My Mac is having one of those days today. Anything Homebrew is broken and I have no idea what I did to mess it up. Getting weird error messages. Wanted to get started with Mongo DB today and I have to waste time fixing stuff before I can do anything.

Using Chat GPT Open API This morning I set up the application drafts to use the Open API available from chat GPT. It was pretty easy to set up though you do have to have a paid for account. When I first looked it seemed that the only option was aged $20 a month subscription. I found out there is a possibility of using the API her and you pay as you use it.

USED CHAT GPT TO WRITE SOME CODE FOR ME IN PYTHON

Doing some cheating with ChatGPT and python coding. I couldn’t exactly remember the syntax so it was easy to AI what I wanted and have it done. Not really cheating though… It’s just another tool to use to save time. The actual hard work is the working out of the problem to be solved and knowing what to ask AI to do.

For a while there I was using Pycharm for my Python coding and it’s pretty good. I liked Pycharm but now I find I like VS Code a little bit more.

Found another FastAPI tutorial From Faraday Academy on YouTube. She’s doing a good job of explaining the Fast API and putting together the API. Early days so far but it’s good to see how someone else does the work. youtu.be/gQTRsZpR7…

Have Letters or Shapes Cut out To reveal an Image below A couple of videos showing ways to do this thing where the image below shows through shapes cut into another shape. So this could text or whatever and there is a shape which masks the image underneath.

I have used DayOne for over 11 years and will probably stick with it, even though the subscription is about 10 Euro cheaper per year. They look quite similar so It would be easy to swap apps. For a beginner I would recommend Diarly, unless you want to add video to your entries.

There’s a Small Bug in Affinity Designer Affecting How You Work with Groups of Objects For a while I was having a problem when I was selecting a group of objects. I tried selecting the group by clicking on the group and I only got one object out of the group. This was annoying when I wanted to change the size of something and I only changed the size of one object in the group and not all of it.

Delighted with my new Yubikey. I bought a 5Ci this time. The others I have are the 5 series with a USB A connector. Having the lightning and the USB C will work better with my iPad and iPhone. Just set up one Google Account with all three keys and also Facebook. It was quite easy to set them up using the Yubico Authenticator app.

HOW TO SHEAR OBJECT/SHAPES IN AFFINITY DESIGNER IPAD AND MAC

Even though you don’t get as many controls to transform shapes by shearing them or skewing them on the iPad you can still get it done. You have to use the control panel for transform, or the Transform Studio which is on the right side of the application. You just have to put your Apple Pencil into the circle which is for controlling the shear amount and move it either up or down.

I baulked at the idea of another subscription with 1Password. Tried KeePassXC and it wasn’t bad. Just not as convenient as 1Password. So I have gone back to using the best password manager. I can access it though a web page on my Raspberry Pi…

Had a bad couple of days with my iPhone and the latest beta 16.4.1. The phone would connect to wifi and the phone network but was n ot to good at pushing the data to the apps. Whatsapp, banking apps, car charging apps and any thing that wanted data has been a pain in the arse. So now I’m taking the beta off the phone. I’ve learned my lesson.

I’m in a village in the Pyrenees in a place where they have snow, and I can’t use the electric car charger and it’s broken because of the snow. How ridiculous is that?

A Push From The Automators Podcast I was listening to the Automators podcast and they suggested that it would be a good idea to run the Stream deck from bettertouchtool rather than using the software that comes from Elgato. YABAI AND STREAMDECK BUTTONS

I have an Elgato Streamdeck and It will be good to use with Yabai. I’ve started setting up a few of the keyboard shortcuts to the buttons. I might look at Better Touch tool to see if I can do some of Yabai with gestures on the Trackpad. Mostly using the actual keyboard shortcuts will be the best way forward.

HOW TO USE THE YABAI WINDOW TILING APP ON MAC OS VENTURA

Amazed at Yabai Window Tiling on MacOS Ventura. Yabai was pretty easy to set up. It’s all controlled by a config file. I did this in Neovim although you could use any good TextEditor. Using Neovim to work on a txt file today and I’m starting to get into it. It is nerdy and not for mere muggles. This evening I did a pile of find and replace which in Neovim is super quick and easy. Once you learn the KB shortcut combinations.

Made a video today showing off how Yabai Window tiling appworks on MacOS Ventura. I like if better than Stage Manager and make great use of all the available space on a big monitor. I’ll be publishing the video tomorrow. Still have to do the chapters to get it ready.

New 4TB Crucial SD drive arrived today. I can put the spinning hard drives out to pasture now. Cool indeed. I see there are 8TB such drives for sale now too.

Learning more about using Neovim. Didn’t get around to making any tutorial videos. Busy getting a tooth pulled at the dentist. Neovim is cool though. Seems confusing at first but eventually gets under your skin.

Affinity Designer iPad - Text on a Path When making logos you will often want to put text on a path. This could be a wavy line or in the case of this tutorial following the shape of a circle. Using the tools to do this on the iPad version of Affinity Designer is slightly more fiddly. I can do it with just one circle and use the controls to fairly easily place the text.

It’s quite a struggle to do the same thing with iPad Affinity Designer. If you want some text the top and some text at the bottom and both the right way up it’s easier to do it with two circles. KEEPASSXC AND KEEPASSIUM

More setting up of KeepassXC and KeePassium I have been using 1Password for years. With the change to Apple Silicon I’d have to get the subscription . So looking to see what’s there I came across KeePassXC. I can use it on the Raspberry Pi’s, as well as the M1 Mac. Now with KeePassium I can also access all my passwords from my iOS devices. So this morning I exported the passwords out of 1Password and imported them into KeePassXC.

Just worked out how to post from Drafts I messed up the credentials of MicroBlog in Drafts. Took me ages to find the Credentials in the settings so I could tell it to forget what was there and put in the correct one. This is a post made from Drafts. Best app on Apple devices to input text. The automations / actions available mean you can do all sorts with your text once you have it in the app.

SLOW TO INSTALL PGP ON MY MACBOOK PRO

I Am A Big Fan Of Using PGP Encryption To be honest I’m at completely taken back and surprised at the fact that four months later with my new MacBook Pro M1 I’ve only just installed GPG Tools. Maybe I shouldn’t be too surprised though, I try to avoid using email as much as possible. If I need to send something sensitive, it is far better to use an encrypted messaging service instead.

Answer for @KristenDanes about Sorted app. On the Mac you will have to learn the keyboard shortcuts or just go to the menubar to click on the formatting options.

BEST WAY OF GETTING IMAGES INTO MICRO BLOG POSTS

It seemed difficult to add images and place them exactly where I wanted them in the Micro.Blog app. When you drop an image in, it goes to the bottom of the post and that’s where it stays. A better way is to drop the images into the app first - in the uploads section. Drag and drop from the uploads window into the new post. You can put the image where you want.

USING NEOVIM IN THE WARP TERMINAL APP

Neovim Is The Best Text Editor To Use On The Command Line There are times when you’re working in the terminal and you need to do something with a text file. It doesn’t make a lot of sense to jump out of the terminal and into a text editor. Not when there are perfectly good text editors to use from the command line. Most people in the situation would immediately open up Nano because it’s simple to use and always there and available.

INSERTING IMAGES INTO MICROBLOG - NOT EASY TO PLACE WHERE YOU WANT THEM

Why is it difficult in the Microblog app to put images where I want them in the post. It adds the image to the end of the page and maybe I want the image inbetween two paragraphs?? I can do it if I publish the post then go back in to cut the html for the image and place it where I want it. There has to be a better way

I MADE A USEFUL PYTHON SCRIPT

I’ve been trying to get the automation I made using Shortcuts and Keyboard Maestro done with Python. I succeeded because I’m Good and Geeky and I persevered. It wasn’t that difficult really. Usability is the Problem What I had was working fine. The Subler text file appeared in the folder and Hazel opened it up for me in BBEdit I typed in the three character string to start the Keyboard Maestro Macro which ran a Shortcut.

I really don’t know about Tana - Should I try it out more or just stick with Obsidian. I really liked Logseq until I gave Obsidian another try?? What do you think? youtu.be/eEKR-daIU…

LEARNING NEOVIM

This morning I’m doing some setting up and learning of Neovim. Learned how to put a set of quotation marks around a word or words just using some keys - ysw(the characters required) eg - ysw" This will add the quotation marks around one word. Also set it up so it works in a similar way to Tmux Cool or what?

KEYSMITH AND SHORTCUTS OR KEYBOARD MAESTRO

Messing about with Mac Automation I set up a Keyboard Maestro to do a set of find and replace actions in the text I get out of Subler . The Chapters for the latest video tutorial. It worked and I was happy with it. But… I wanted to see if I could do it with Shortcuts. Yea… Success I made it work. Booo…. It stopped working and I couldn’t work out why.

GETTING INTO NEOVIM

Yesterday I did some more fiddling about with Neovim. Setting it up to be prettier and also more useful. Now have a file explorer in Neovim which makes it easy to get to files in a project. I have different colours in the status bar by using a lualine extension/plugin. Nice to see clearly which mode you are.

WORKING WITH THE COMMAND LINE AND NEOVIM

Setting up Neovim I should be making a video but I’m setting up Neovim because I’m having some success with getting it sorted out. I’ve managed to get the colours sorted out for the information bar at the bottom of the screen. Now it shows me a different colour for each of the different modes I might be in. This makes it much easier to work out what I’m supposed to be doing with the keys.

Today I’ve been following the tutorial in Neovim. It all seems quite complicated but if I can remember the commands there is loads of efficiency in there. Anyway it’s all about being Goodandgeeky for fun.

LINING UP NODES WITH A NOTE EDITING TOOL

If you’re creating a zigzag and you want to have nodes lining up properly it’s easy to do if they’re going either vertical or horizontal. What about if you want to line up nodes and you’ve got a diagonal across the screen? It becomes a little bit more difficult because you can’t use the alignment tools. However, there is a way to use the snapping options to get your node lining up properly.

What we need it for passwords for websites to become history. Using keys like SSH style keys would be great. Put a public key on a server and have my private key on my devices. No passwords needed.

I’ve been using 1Password for years. Now I’m looking at KeePassXC. Not as pretty but it looks like it will do most of the job. Don’t think there’s an iOS app which is a bit of a downer. Also I’ve been using a Raycast extension to make passwords for me. Quick and easy.

It is perfectly possible to work with multipage documents in Affinity Designer although you can’t actually create the multipage documents. What do you need to do is to use a template which already has multiple pages set up within it. If you want to make your own multipage documents then you need to open up Affinity Publisher. You can open the affinity publisher document within Affinity Designer or you can save the Publisher document as a template.
